6 Makeup Removers vs. Liquid Lipstick - Which Will Reign Supreme?

Makeup is an amazing form of art that is a great way of expression for many people. But, what about when it comes time to take your work of art off of your face? Today, I'm going to be putting eight makeup removers to the test-- from water to balms to wipes. Which remover will reign supreme? 👑
🧪 The control for today's little experiment is going to be Too Faced Melted Matte Red Lippie. This stuff is a trooper and stays put all day, so I thought it would be a great test subject! 💄
First up to bat is plain ole water. It's free, so why not, right? Right?! 🚰
🙅‍♀️ Wrong. As you can see, this did an awful job... That's why having a good makeup remover is essential for your routine! 💁‍♀️
Next up is the Original Makeup Eraser
💸 For $20, this "reusable makeup wipe" has some pretty loud claims. According to their site,

"#1 sustainable makeup remover in the world. Erase ALL Makeup With JUST Water! Including waterproof mascara, eyeliner, foundation, lipstick, & more! The Original MakeUp Eraser is a premium, patented, polyester cloth made up of millions of tiny hair-like fibers that work together to create a "suction" for all dirt, makeup, & oil in your pores. Double-sided to erase makeup with the short fiber side & exfoliate the skin with the long fiber side (side with tag). Reusable, machine washable, & lasts 3 to 5 years. 1 MakeUp Eraser is equal to 3600 makeup wipes! No chemicals, less waste. Ultra-soft, dermatologist approved, & great for sensitive skin."

This did a pretty good job -- I can see why so many people love it-- but I felt like I could do better, so I continued on.

Next is Purlisse's Watermelon Purifying Cleansing Milk. For $18, "this detoxifying gel cleanser gently cleanses, removes makeup, purifies & energizes the skin. This soothing multi-tasker leaves skin pure, clean & free of toxins without stripping skin of it's natural oils."
.....Did this actually do worse than water? Umm... no thanks. Moving on. 🙅‍♀️

Next is Earth Harbor's Sunshine Dew Antioxidant Cleansing Oil. For $24,

"sweet tropical sunshine with silky dew drops sail smoothly across your face removing impurities, pollution, and makeup. Antioxidant-rich oils infused with Sea Kelp + Papaya Enzymes will arouse your senses while profoundly cleansing and softening your complexion. Sunshine Dew rinses completely clean with water; no tugging, scrubbing, nor greasy feeling. Just an effortless oil massage & rinse leaving skin fresh, soft, hydrated, and bright."

This did a pretty decent job! There was a slight color left on my arm still, but it would definitely get rid of regular, everyday makeup! 💋

Moving on to Elemis's Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm (Buy Here). For a whopping $64, it "deep cleanses, softens,  and nourishes. The powerful, deep cleansing ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm dissolves makeup, daily grime and pollutants. Skin is intensely cleansed, nourished and renewed for a glowing complexion."
...This just didn't do it for me... I wanted to love it, I really did. 😩

Up next is Farmacy's Very Cherry Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm. For $34,

"This holy grail cleansing balm instantly melts makeup, removes impurities, and gently exfoliates. It transforms from a sorbet-like balm to silky oil to milky lather to remove makeup effortlessly with zero residue."

This bad boy really did a good job, leaving pretty much nothing left. I can see why it keeps selling out! Plus, it smells like cherries. 😍 I totally recommend it, and it's sister product, the Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm!

Lastly, is Monat's Makeup Vanishing Balm. This $65 product is...

a smooth, makeup-melting sorbet that goes from silky to milky and rinses clean without a trace. It works thoroughly and quickly with powerful prevention to prepare healthy skin that's ready for the next step. It features natural fruit acid blends to dissolve makeup, leaving skin hydrated, silky smooth and fresh. Some benefits include that it's a great pre-cleanse step, gentle makeup removal—even long-wearing makeup, non-stripping or drying, and traceless makeup removal with age control benefits.

😍 There's a reason this stuff is my favorite. My arm is a little red from taking the lippie off so many times, but it didn't leave a speck of the lipstick on my arm!
I also used this to remove the residue from the other tests! 💪
Therefore, my top three are Monat's, Farmacy's, and Makeup Eraser's! 🏆🏆🏆

It goes to show that different people's skin react differently. I have used the makeup eraser cloth with Purlisse Watermelon cleansing milk to follow up and the combo worked for me. I will say that I would love to try the Farmacy cleansing balm as I currently have the cherry eye cream and I enjoy that a lot. Thanks for the review.

This looks like a great combo!

I am not much into cleansers, I like to use Noxzema scrub but that's is. But as far as, make up removers. I just use water or a baby wipe. All this different options are new to me. But I love the lipstick. Thanks for sharing.

I always use Garnier's Micellar water followed by either a oil cleanser or Glossier's milky cleanser whenever I wear makeup. I would very much like to try the makeup eraser so I can be more eco-friendly.

Great review . My makeup remover and cleanser for my face is Purity by Philosophy..

My favorite make up remover is the Hyaluronic Marine Melt away Cleanser by Dr. Dennis Gross. It's isn't harsh at all and works great at removing oily make up. I also like Osea Ocean Cleanser with algea especially on heavy make up days. To make sure I don't break out from insufficient cleansing, I'll use Murad cleanser.

Great review and comparisons! Thank you for the post. I think I has a makeup eraser and I lost it when I moved. My go-to makeup remover so far is Vinopure Gel Cleanser by Caudalie, it cleans very well and effectively. I use this for heavy makeup and use other products like CeraVe for lighter makeup. I avoid breaking out by deeply cleansing each and every area so no debris or dirt is missed.

Cool review! All of these products look awesome! I love Too Faced lipsticks!!! The Melted Matte is amazing!! I usually use the Neutrogena oil-free make up remover at night, then wash with Clean and Clear face wash.

Cherries...sound like a plan. Really like these plans you chose in the posted review. Very cherry merry clean makeup want to try the most.

  • Tonilynn Rosario

great review on products to erase liquid lipstick.

  • Brooke Wallace

Thank you for this review, I am always looking for a liquid lipstick that actually stays on my lips, I will need to try melted. I use neutrogena wipes for my make-up remover and that works well.

Farmacy and Monday looked like it works the best! Thank you for this review!

I love it! I’m a huge fan of cleansing balms and micellar water when it comes to makeup remover. Right now I love the Garnier micellar — I haven’t been wearing heavy makeup and it works just right!
